Following Council member Gary Feldmann’s resignation on Sept. 3 as the Ward 1 Monticello City Council representative, the council now has 60 days to appoint someone to fill the vacancy.

City Administrator Doug Herman brought the timeline to the council’s attention at the Sept. 8 meeting.

“We need to see if there is interest and if someone is willing to be appointed,” noted Herman.

It was the opinion of the council to appoint someone rather than pay for a special election.

“It makes no sense to schedule a special election if there’s only one person who’s willing to do it,” commented Council member Dave Goedken of the lack of interest lately in serving on the city council. “The money would be a total waste.”

Ward 1 is generally described as west of Main Street and south of First Street.

If the council does not make an appointment, the county auditor would then have to schedule a special election.

A special election could also be forced by those living in the ward via petition.
