County department updates a smart decision

Express Editorial

For the last few weeks, the Jones County Board of Supervisors has requested weekly updates from a different department heads at each board meeting.

These updates aren't just to benefit the board as they prepare for budget season at the end of the year, but having your local newspaper editor present for each meeting, the Express is able to report on these updates as well.

While various department heads report on a weekly basis, some aren't heard from but once a year when they're scheduled to make their budget proposals to the board. At that time, if any department is proposing a major purchase or project, this might be the first and only time the board ever hears of it. Planning is key.

With these updates appearing in the Express, the citizens of Jones County can read about what each department has taken on and accomplished over the last several months. Again, despite our weekly coverage of the board meetings, not every department provides an update on a regular basis.

These updates also offer the public insight into the happenings throughout the county. Did you know the County Attorney's Office is considering hiring an additional employee to assist with the workload and specialized cases? Did you know the Auditor's Office hired additional help, which is much needed during any election? Did you know the breadth of projects throughout the county Conservation has taken on? Did you know more work throughout these parks and wildlife areas is needed?

While it's difficult for the average citizen to attend a county supervisor meeting, these updates help keep everyone informed, feeling as if they're a part of the county's government. (K.N.B.)
