Contract rock bids came in for approximately 180 miles of gravel roads throughout Jones County, and, as expected, numbers are higher than last year.

     Four quarries/companies submitted bids:

     • Bard Concrete bid on eight different roads, ranging from $9 to $10.89

     • Weber Stone bid on all of the roads, ranging from $11.75 to $14.75

     • Wendling Quarries bid on about half of the roads, ranging from $10.15 to $13

     • River City bid on about a quarter of the roads, ranging from $8.95 to $11.75

County Engineer Derek Snead said his office would collect and review all of the bids and present a bid tab to the board at their next meeting.

The board tabled any action until the bids were reviewed.

In other county business:

Emergency Management Coordinator Brenda Leonard shared that she is working with JETS and Senior Dining to hammer out the details to deliver free meals to residents throughout the county.

The meals come from a $44,000 Iowa Economic Development food distribution grant for public emergencies.

Leonard said there are no stipulations on the food recipients other than those placed locally: reduced income due to COVID-19 and those ill or quarantined due to the virus.

Supervisor Joe Oswald thanked and praised County Auditor Janine Sulzner, Public Health Coordinator Jenna Lovaas, and Leonard and their staff “for all you’ve been doing and have done” during this time.
