Court Proceedings
• Elizabeth Mae Topping, 23, of Anamosa, pleaded guilty to two counts of animal neglect with injury.
Topping was sentenced to 120 days in jail, with all but 14 days suspended. Topping was also placed on two years of probation and fined $860 plus court costs.
• Byron Lee Ziel, 39, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested Nov. 23 on a charge of driving while barred and providing false information.
Court documents state a Jones County Deputy pulled over a vehicle driven by Ziel for a window tint violation. Ziel lied several times about his identity, gave an incorrect name and could not provide a date of birth, according to court documents. A record check showed Ziel was barred and had an earliest license reinstatement of Jan. 18, 2037, documents state.
• Travis John Haney, 35, of Anamosa, was arrested Nov. 23 on two charges of dominion/control of a firearm or offensive weapon by a domestic abuse offender.
Court documents state Anamosa officers were serving a search warrant at Haney’s residence and uncovered an AR-15-style lower receiver which is considered an offensive weapon by Iowa law. Haney is listed on an order of protection which bars him from possessing firearms or ammunition, documents state.
• Garrett Dale McCoy, 23, of Monticello, pleaded guilty to public intoxication.
McCoy was ordered to pay court costs.
• Samantha Jo Potter, 30, of Delmar, was arrested Nov. 19 on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.
Court documents state a Jones County deputy pulled over a vehicle Potter was riding in for pulling a trailer with no license plate displayed. A K9 unit performed an open-air sniff of the vehicle and indicated there were narcotics inside. Prior to authorities conducting a search of the vehicle, Potter stepped out and handed over a glasses case that contained a glass pipe and a small baggie containing a crystal substance that was field tested and determined to be methamphetamine documents state.
• Travis John Haney, 35, of Anamosa, was arrested Nov. 23 on charges of disorderly conduct and interference with official acts.
Court documents state Anamosa officers responded to a report of a truck doing burnouts in a driveway at 1:15 in the morning. While authorities were on scene, Haney intentionally set off the truck’s alarm and was standing in his yard yelling and cursing at officers, documents state. Haney also refused to obey officers’ orders during his arrest, documents state.
• Dakota Patrick Ash, 32, of Monticello, was arrested Nov. 23 on a charge of interference with official acts.
Court documents state a sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to Military Road and 190th Street for a white pickup whose occupants may have been hunting animals with a spotlight. The deputy spoke with the driver who showed signs of intoxication, court documents state, and refused to follow the deputies’ directions in taking a field sobriety test.
• Jesse Joseph Lafountain, 23, of Monticello, was arrested Nov. 23 on a charge of interference with official acts.
Court documents state Lafountain was operating a truck loudly and refused to identify himself to officers.
Lafountain pleaded guilty to the charge Nov. 24 and was fined $250 plus court costs.
• Demetrice Diontray Coleman, 36, of Waterloo, was arrested Nov. 21 on a charge of driving while license denied or revoked.
Court documents state a Monticello officer watched Coleman drive into the parking lot of a Monticello convenience store. Coleman saw the officer and “laid down in the back seat of the van and eventually approached me after I figured out who he was,” the officer said in court documents.
Coleman said he had just left a domestic situation and he agreed to go to a hotel for the night and stay there until someone with a valid driver’s license arrived, charging documents state. The officer then parked up the block and soon thereafter saw Coleman’s vehicle driving again. The officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and found Coleman behind the wheel, who stated he “just wanted to get home,” documents state.
• Simon Edward Nisly, 69, of Kalona, was arrested Nov. 24 on a charge of operating a commercial vehicle while license disqualified.
Court documents state Nisly was driving a log truck on U.S. 151. During a traffic stop, authorities discovered Nisly possessed a disqualified commercial driver’s license, documents state.
• Kaleb Clayton Rigby, 24, of Monticello, pleaded guilty to OWI first offense.
Rigby was fined $625, received a deferred judgement and was placed on probation for one year.
