Cubs blank Dyersville to open tourney
A.J. Reuter pitched a four-hit shutout, and Monticello jumped ahead quickly, on the way to a 5-0 win over Dyersville in the opening round of the Worthington Tournament.
The semi-pro baseball game was played June 23 in Worthington.
“I thought we might be a little rusty with a week between games, but we got up early and never gave in,” Monticello player/manager Garett Hanken said. “A.J. overpowered their lineup and didn’t give them many chances.”
Reuter struck out eight for the Cubs (1-6 in the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League, 5-8 overall), who advanced to the quarterfinal round. They were scheduled to play Epworth June 26.
“Hopefully we can build momentum and make a little run up there,” Hanken said.
Monticello jumped ahead with a three-run first inning, helped by three Dyersville errors and a bases-loaded walk to A.J. Reuter. Tanner Felton hit a solo home run in the second inning, and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Huxford in the fourth brought Jacob Thompson home with the fifth Monticello run.
Dyersville got a runner as far as third base only once.
The Cubs also have two additional games this week, at Rickardsville June 28 and a first round game in the Rickardsville tournament, against Balltown, on July 1 at 2:30 p.m.
