Cubs open with loss at Cascade

     The Monticello Cubs semi-pro baseball team opened its 2018 season by taking an early lead, but it didn’t last in a 10-1 loss to the Cascade Reds May 4 at Cascade.

     The Reds scored two runs in the second inning and seven in the third to send the Cubs to an 0-1 record.

     “We were very rusty, but there were some positives for the first game of the year,” Monticello player-manager Garett Hanken said. “We started out the game by stringing several hits together, and were able to get work for several guys on the mound.”

     A.J. Reuter was the starting pitcher for Monticello, working three innings and allowing two runs to take the loss. Mitch Monk, Michael Reuter and Nick Miller pitched in relief.

     Monticello was held to three hits, singles by Mitch Monk, Michael Reuter and Tanner Felton to open the game. Michael Reuter scored the Cubs’ only run, on a wild pitch in the first inning.

     “Sometimes it’s good to get the first game out of the way,” Hanken said.
