Cubs pick up one win in busy week
It was one of the busiest weeks of the season for the Monticello Cubs semi-pro baseball team, but it wasn’t one of their best. Monticello played a pair of games in the Cascade Tournament, and a pair of league games, coming out of the week with a win and three losses.
The Cubs (6-10) opened the week with a home game against the Dubuque Budweisers, and lost 11-6. A key to the game was a six-run top of the first inning for the Budweisers, who led throughout the game. Monticello trailed 8-3 after three innings, and never got closer than a five-run deficit.
Monticello did have 11 hits. Tanner Felton batted 2-for-4 with two home runs and three runs batted in. Andrew Mescher was 2-for-2, while Matt Holmes and Tyler Felton both went 2-for-4. Starting pitcher Mescher took the loss, and Kyle Wright pitched four innings in relief.
The next two Monticello games were part of the Cascade Tournament. Monticello won its first round contest, beating Zwingle 6-3 July 15. The Cubs scored in each of the first four innings to take a 6-2 lead, and pitcher A.J. Reuter went the distance, allowing two earned runs on three hits and striking out nine. Tyler Felton and A.J. Reuter had two hits apiece; one of Reuter’s was a double.
Monticello then played a quarterfinal game July 17 in the Cascade Tournament, and lost a 12-1 decision in five innings to Epworth. The Orioles broke the game open early with eight runs in the top of the first inning, and held Monticello to four hits, including a double by Wright. The Cubs used four pitchers: Parker Kray, who took the loss; Mescher, Wright, and Zach Monk.
On July 19, the Cubs faced Dubuque for the second time in seven days, and went down to defeat in six innings by a score of 15-1. Jon Mootz had a big game at the plate for Monticello, going 3-for-3 and scoring the team’s only run, on an RBI single by Greg Kraus in the second innings.
Dubuque scored in five of the six innings, including a six-run rally in the top of the sixth.
