Cubs take second in Placid tourney, wrap up season

SEMI-PRO BASEBALL

A big inning each way contributed to a win and a loss for the Monticello Cubs, who wrapped up their semi-pro baseball season with a runner-up finish in the annual Placid Tournament Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 19-20.

The Cubs won their semifinal game 8-3 over Placid on Saturday, breaking open a 4-3 game with four runs in the top of the ninth inning.

In Sunday’s championship game against Rickardsville, Monticello gave up five runs in the third inning on the way to a 6-2 loss.

The tournament featured the return of some familiar faces, and also some Cubs power.

Against Placid, longtime Cub Chuck Cavanaugh returned to the team and contributed by going 2-for-5, including a solo home run. Cody Takes, another former Cub, also filled in and picked up a hit for the team.

“Cody and Chuck didn’t miss a beat after taking a few years off,” Monticello player-manager Garett Hanken said.

The big inning for Monticello was the ninth. After Jake Bockenstadt drew a one-out walk, Nolan Cavanaugh, Chuck Cavanaugh and Hanken hit consecutive singles. After a fielder’s choice for the second out, Kyle Sperfslage and Michael Reuter hit RBI singles.

The Cubs used five pitchers, who combined on a four-hitter over nine innings. Michael Reuter worked the fourth and fifth innings and picked up the win. Jacob Thompson, Sperfslage, Hanken and Bockenstadt also pitched.

Monticello collected 14 hits. Tanner Felton was 3-for-5 with a double, and Michael Reuter finished 3-for-6. Nolan Cavanaugh was 2-for-5.

“Everyone contributed in this one, from top to bottom,” Hanken said.

In Sunday’s title game, Rickardsville took a 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning, collecting three unearned runs.

“We had one sloppy inning that did us in,” Hanken said.

Tanner Felton and Thompson provided the team’s only runs with solo homers. The Cubs had other chances, totaling 11 hits and leaving nine runners on base. Zach Monk batted 3-for-3, Tanner Felton was 3-for-4, and Thompson was 2-for-4.

Tyler Felton, Ryan Manternach, Nick Miller and Parker Kray shared pitching duties, with Manternach taking the loss.

“It would have been great to end the season with a win, but there’s always next year,” Hanken said.

The Cubs finished 3-13 in Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League play, and 9-22 overall.

“Hopefully we’ll return most of the guys next year, and we can improve on our league record and tournament finishes,” Hanken said.
