Cubs, Thompson win exhibition

SEMI-PRO BASEBALL

It was a short week, and a short game, and the Monticello Cubs made short work of Placid during a semi-pro baseball exhibition June 16 in Placid.

The Cubs scored 11 runs in the second inning to open a 17-2, and went on to win 19-4 in a game stopped after three innings because of both a time limit and the mercy rule.

The exhibition was part of Placid Day of Honor, a hall of fame ceremonial event.

“It was a fun day for everyone, but we probably had more fun during the game,” Monticello player/manager Garett Hanken said. “Everyone was hitting and it was contagious.”

The Cubs had 15 hits. Most notably, Jacob Thompson batted 4-for-4 with two home runs and six total runs batted in, including a grand slam in the second inning. A.J. Reuter was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Kyle Huxford and Ben Stutt both went 2-for-2. Ben Stutt and Tyler Felton had three RBIs apiece.

Thompson pitched the first two innings and was credited with the win.

The Cubs will play Dyersville in the first round of the Worthington Tournament June 22 at 8:30 p.m.

“Hopefully we can bring this kind of offense to the Worthington Tournament,” Hanken said.
