Cubs win tourney opener
Jacob Thompson drove in three runs with a home run and a double, and Nick Miller pitched seven innings as the Monticello Cubs defeated New Vienna 5-4 July 16.
The game was in the first round of the Rickardsville Tournament.
“We needed to get back in the win column,” Cubs player-manager Garett Hanken said. “Nick had good stuff and kept them off balance all game. He did a heck of a job going all seven innings for us. And Jacob continued to be solid in the middle of the order,” Hanken said.
The Cubs (1-7, 5-11) spotted New Vienna a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but answered with two in the bottom half on Thompson’s RBI double and a run-scoring single by Kyle Huxford.
New Vienna took a brief 3-2 lead again in the third, but Thompson’s two-run homer in the bottom half, also scoring Evan Felton, put Monticello ahead. Evan Felton added an RBI hit in the fourth.
Zach Monk had a big game at the top of the lineup, going 3-for-4 and stealing two bases. Tyler Felton was 2-for-3 and had three steals.
The Cubs were scheduled to play in the Rickardsville Tournament quarterfinals, against Zwingle, on July 18. They will also play a doubleheader at Worthington Sunday, July 23 at 2 p.m.
