Cubs wrap up season with six-game flurry
While the last couple of weeks of the Monticello Cubs’ semi-pro baseball season didn’t go the way the team had hoped, they did get a measure of happiness in the final game of 2021.
Matt Holmes hit a walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Monticello to a 3-2 victory over Peosta Aug. 13 at Dailey Field in Monticello.
Tyler Smith, pitching in relief of starter Greg Kraus, picked up the win. Smith went four innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out five and walking none. Kraus worked the first three innings, giving up two hits.
Tanner Felton went 3-for-3 at the plate, including a double. Holmes finished 2-for-4.
The win ended a flurry of six games in seven days as the Cubs worked to make up some Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League games and finishing up in two tournaments.
Back on Aug. 7, the Cubs lost a consolation game to Cascade in the Dyersville Tournament, by a score of 9-0. Monticello was held to one hit, a single by A.J. Reuter. Mitch Monk pitched and took the loss.
On Aug. 8, Monticello lost a see-saw home game to Rickardsville, 11-9, at Dailey Field. The game saw Caleb Sauser hit a grand slam in the third inning to give the Cubs a 6-3 lead, and Zain Sauer connect on a two-run shot in the sixth. But Rickardsville’s seven-run sixth inning proved to be the difference.
Cole Thurn batted 3-for-3 for Monticello. Holmes and Sauser finished with two hits apiece. Sauser took the loss on the mound.
Next, Monticello played a league game at Farley Aug. 9, and lost 10-4 despite 10 hits. Quinn Miller was 3-for-4. Ryan Manternach batted 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a double. Garett Hanken also went 2-for-3. Tyler Felton pitched and took the loss.
Then came a league home game against Key West Aug. 11, which the Cubs lost 9-3. Three Cubs had two hits apiece: Tanner Felton, Ryan Manternach and Michael Reuter. Miller hit a double. Starting pitcher Andrew Stover was dealt the loss.
Monticello had one more tournament game, Aug. 12, losing 10-9 to East Dubuque. The Cubs appeared to have things in hand with a four-run seventh inning that gave them a 9-7 lead, but East Dubuque scored three times in the bottom half to steal away the win.
The Cubs finished the season with a 13-18 record.
