Jones County celebrated Day of Caring on May 10 with over 400 volunteers taking the time to lend a hand throughout the county.

“This is our biggest volunteer event of the year,” said Amy Keltner, the Jones County Volunteer Center coordinator.

Keltner organizes the event every year. Locally, Day of Caring started in 2013 with just a dozen volunteers. In six years it has grown tremendously.

Those volunteers who could, met at 9 a.m. at the Lawrence Community Center in Anamosa for a group photo and preliminary information. From there, they all set out on their individual volunteer assignments:

• Anamosa School REVIVE group spent their day at Central Park.

• F&M Bank in Anamosa worked at the Anamosa Arboretum.

• Jones Regional Medical Center staff rotated throughout the day at Anamosa Fareway, helping with the food drive.

• F&M Bank in Monticello assisted at the Monticello Senior Dining site.

• Anamosa Middle School students helped Anamosa Parks and Rec.

• A couple of volunteers helped the Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition post alcohol-free graduation signs and hang fliers.

• The entire Anamosa High School spent their afternoon at a variety of places: putting together 100 literacy kits for Strawberry Hill Elementary; Anamosa Public Library; Anamosa Care Center; Wapsipinicon State Park; HACAP preschool; Central Park; and yard work throughout the schools in Anamosa.
