Deadlines set for local 2026 primary, election

Anyone interested in running for one of the county-level seats on the 2026 election ballot can file paperwork to do so beginning next month. 

Whitney Hein, Jones County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections, said the nomination filing period for the June 2 primary election will begin Monday, March 2. Papers can be turned in to the Jones County Auditor’s Office located in the Jones County Courthouse, 500 W. Main St., Anamosa. 

Democrat and Republican candidates for the offices of District 3 and District 4 county supervisor, county treasurer, county recorder and county attorney must file nomination papers in the auditor’s office between March 2 and 5 p.m. on March 20. Nomination petitions for all candidates must contain the signatures of at least 75 eligible electors of Jones County. 

Non-partisan candidates for county offices and township offices on the Nov. 3, 2026, ballot will need to file candidate paperwork in the auditor’s office between March 2 and 5 p.m. on June 2, 2026. Non-partisan candidates for county offices must follow the same signature requirements as the partisan candidates for these offices. Township offices only require an affidavit of candidacy, as there are no signature requirements for these offices. 

County ag extension and soil and water commissioner candidates will need to file candidate paperwork by 5 p.m. on Aug. 26 for the Nov. 3 general election. Nomination petitions for candidate of these positions must contain the signatures of at least 25 eligible electors of the district.

Nomination packets are available in the Jones County auditor’s office and are also available under upcoming elections on the Jones County Elections website, jonescountyiowa

elections.gov.

Supervisor District maps can be viewed on the county website or in the auditor’s office.
