Dean Arthur Bartels, 73, of Freeport, Ill., passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Nov. 12, 2021.

Dean was born to William and Mary (Dirks) Bartels on Sept. 29, 1948, in Anamosa, Iowa. Dean grew up in Hopkinton, Iowa, and attended Maquoketa Valley High School. Dean began his life-long love of music in Iowa, with his mother securing accordion gigs for him in his childhood.

Dean married the love of his life Ellen “Ellie” Bartels (Petitt) on Jan. 20, 1968. He served in the U.S. Army on active duty from 1969-1971, where he was stationed in Korea.
