A few things have been established now that the Monticello High School bowling teams have completed three matches this season, including two last week:

Sophomore Caleb Gillmore is establishing himself as one of the state’s elite bowlers, the Panther boys’ team is showing its depth, and the girls’ team is displaying steady improvement.

The Panthers split the home match against Cascade Nov. 27 at Legacy Lanes, with the boys winning 2628 to 2369, and the Panther girls losing 2015 to 1930.

Then, Monticello made its first road trip of the season, traveling to Manchester’s Lightning Lanes Nov. 29 to face West Delaware.

The host Hawks won the boys’ match 2942 to 2542, and won the girls’ match 2406 to 2005.

Gillmore had strong performances in both matches. Against Cascade, he totaled 440 for the two individual games, and at West Delaware he totaled 437, including a 245 second game.

“Caleb is bowling really well,” Monticello coach Brian Meyer said. “He’s got to be right up there in the top 10 in the state.”

As of Monday, Gillmore’s average of 216.8 through six games ranked him seventh individually among Class 1A schools, which is the Panthers’ bowling classification.

The Panther boys (2-1) won both the individual round and the Baker round against Cascade.

On the girls’ side, Monticello outscored Cascade in the team-oriented Baker round, 650 to 620, but that wasn’t enough to make up for the 105-pin lead the Cougars built in the individual round.

Keeley Anderson led the Panthers with a two-game total of 323.

Facing West Delaware Nov. 29 was a daunting task; the Hawks are two-time defending state boys’ champions, and the girls’ team had qualified for State the past two seasons.

The Panther boys trailed by 181 after the individual round, but West Delaware controlled the Baker portion, collecting a 1010 to 791 advantage to pull away for the win.

“We still struggle at Baker,” Meyer said. “We had a chance (after the individual round) but everything has to click, and we had some struggles.”

Still, the coach said he was encouraged by the individual performances. Gillmore led the way with 437, and Gary Pasker had a 221 game as part of his 359 total. Levi Temple totaled 325, Jacob Farmer had 320, David Titman scored 310, and Noah Arduser had 302.

The junior varsity bowlers just rolled one game apiece, but Easton Lee had a 176 and Alex Fagan contributed a 156.

“I think we’re pretty deep,” Meyer said. “I really would up our top nine bowlers against anybody’s top nine bowlers that we’ve seen so far.”

The Panther girls (0-3) were 75 pins better at West Delaware than they had been at home three days earlier, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Hawks.

“Their girls’ team is very developed,” Meyer said. “But our girls are still engaged, and giving their best. These kids are pushing, and I’m encouraged by that.”

Leah Holub led the Panther girls with a two-game score of 298, followed by Keeley Anderson and Jordan Lorenzen with 285 apiece, and Hope Vorbeck with 278.
