Deputy Treasurer killed in accident

The Jones County Treasurer’s Office lost one of its team members on Wednesday, Nov. 6 due to a car accident. 

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Michelle “Shelli” Gray, 39, of Hopkinton was driving a 2013 Dodge Durango traveling eastbound on Old Dubuque Road in Anamosa. Gray stopped at the stop sign to enter Highway 151. Keith R. Ahles, 50, of Medford, Wis., was driving a 2020 freight semi, traveling southbound on 151. Gray entered the intersection of the highway and was struck by Ahles. 

Gray was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. They were assisted at the scene by the Anamosa Police Department, Anamosa Fire Department, Jones County Sheriff’s Office, and Jones County EMS. 

Gray started working for the Treasurer’s Office as a Motor Vehicle Deputy in February 2019. 

Upon her passing, the Treasurer’s Office closed for business on Nov. 7. They announced the office would open again to the public on Tuesday, Nov. 12, following the courthouse’s closure on Veterans Day. Gray’s funeral was held on Monday, Nov. 11 at the Golden Congregational Church in Ryan. 

She leaves behind three children: Emma, Claira, and Dominic; and her husband Jamie Gray, all of Hopkinton. 

Gray’s obituary read: “Shelli enjoyed traveling, camping, and loved going to Pictured Rocks Park near Monticello. She was very involved with her family and especially enjoyed attending her children’s activities. Shelli loved her family and cherished the time they spent together. She left beauty wherever she went and to everything she touched.”
