Donald A. Stott

      Donald A. Stott, at the age of 19, lost his life aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor. His remains were recently identified through advancements in DNA testing and will be returned to Monticello for burial.

    Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2023, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Monticello with Pastor David Raemisch officiating. Service will be streamed via Facebook Live and available for viewing at the start of service. Burial, with full military honors, will follow the service at Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, is assisting Donald's family and the United States Navy.

    Donald was born on Feb. 27, 1922, in Monticello, Iowa to Wilbur Stott and Dorothy Pearl (Gaddie) Littlefield Stott.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings Raymond Stott and Rose (Littlefield) Brokaw Schaeffer.

    He is survived by two nieces, Gerty (Lawrence) O'Leary of Herculaneum, Mo. and Neena (Paul) Petersen of Knoxville, Tenn.; one nephew, Tom (Jill) Brokaw Jr. of Monticello; along with numerous great and great-great-nieces and nephews.

    At a young age, he went to live with William (Skinny) and Hulda Behrends and their sons, John and Larry.

    He attended school in Monticello.

    He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. At that young age, his father had to sign for permission.

    He enjoyed the brief time that he spent in Hawaii and was proud to be serving his country.

    His large family is proud of his service at Pearl Harbor. He served his country with pride and made the ultimate sacrifice.

    The family wants to express thanks to the United States Navy for their diligence and respect in making this happen.
