Eagle girls are fifth in Tri-Rivers meet

Girls track

     Midland scored 65 points to garner a fifth place finish in the 12-team Tri-Rivers Conference Girls Track and Field Meet Thursday, May 4 at Maquoketa Valley High School in Delhi.

     Libertie Uppena continued her string of strong showings in the shot put, winning the conference title with a throw of 38-foot-2.25. She also was second in the discus at 104-1.

     Sisters Jaelynn and Kayla Folkers ran two-three in the 3,000, respectively, with times of 11:20.64 and 12:21.65. Drew Jensen was runner-up in the 400, in 1:02.36.

     Also taking third place were Emma Dusanek in the 100, 13.00; and Jaelynn Folkers in the 1,500, 5:24.72.

     The Eagles will compete in the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet Thursday, May 11, 4 p.m. in Central City.

 

Boys track

     Midland totaled 24 points in a 10th-place finish at the Tri-Rivers Conference Boys Track and Field Meet Thursday, May 4 at Maquoketa Valley High School in Delhi.

     Landon Hunter had a runner-up finish in the 400 hurdles, in 58.57. Alex Martens was second in the high jump, at 6-foot-2.25.

     “Alex had his best showing in the high jump that he has had all season,” Midland coach Eric Smith said. “Martens has a real chance to make it to State this year. Landon Hunter is another athlete from Midland who has a real chance of getting to State.”

     The coach also praised the efforts of Trace Jensen in the 800, taking sixth; Elijah Spilman, who had a personal record in the long jump; and Jacob Shoaff, who placed seventh in the 110 hurdles.

     The Eagles will compete in the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet Thursday, May 11, 4 p.m. in Central City.

 

Golf

     Midland’s boys shot 213 and finished in seventh place in the 12-team Tri-Rivers Conference Boys Golf Tournament Tuesday, May 2 in Bellevue.

     East Buchanan was the team conference champion with a score of 164, winning by 23 strokes over runner-up Easton Valley.

     For Midland, Carter Mohr had the low score of 51. Ethan Orr shot 53, Peyton Rupp had 54, Connor Harms scored 55, while Carson Rupp and Sebastian Kreel each had 59.

     Chris Cooksley of East Buchanan was the individual TRC champion with a 38.

     Next, Midland hosted its annual co-ed golf meet on Wednesday, May 3, in which male and female duos compete in an alternate shot format.

     Calamus-Wheatland won the meet with a score of 211, Lisbon was second with 217, and Midland shot 225 to finish third.

     For the Eagles, the team of Mohr and Sydney Stender led the way with a 54. Harms and Anna Roseland shot 56, Kreel and Nicole Guenther totaled 57, and the team of Peyton Rupp and Christine Agnitsch shot 58.
