Eagles close regular season with eight wins

Girls basketball

     They call it “running the table,” and the Midland High School girls basketball can lay claim to that cliché after closing the regular season with eight straight wins.

     The Eagles picked up the last of those eight wins last week, scoring a 59-42 home win over Lisbon Jan. 30. Midland had three players score in double figures: Calli Markmann with 16 points, Morgan Soper with 15 and Drew Jensen with 10. Delanie Uppena pulled down 15 rebounds, while Emma Vacek and Mikayla Dosland scored six points apiece. Arianna Hacke blocked three shots.

     Midland finished the regular season 12-8 in Tri-Rivers play, 12-10 overall.

 

Wrestling

     Three Midland Eagles advanced to district competition during the Class 1A sectional tournament Saturday, Feb. 3 at Cascade.

     Brett Schoenherr, at 220 pounds, was a champion for Midland, winning by fall and then by medical forfeit.

     Two other Eagles reached the finals, lost, but did not have to wrestle back for the true second spot, finishing second overall. They included Damon Huston at 106 and Carson Hunter at 145.

     Taking third for the Eagles were Trevor Gudenkauf at 126 and Griffin Gravel at 132. In fourth were David Flores at 152 and Alex Thomas at 195.

     As a team, the Eagles finished fifth overall, with 114.5 points. Maquoketa Valley won the meet with 201, Cascade was second with 159.5, and Alburnett took third with 156.

     Midland’s three qualifiers will compete in the district tournament Saturday, Feb. 10 at Jesup.

 

Boys basketball

     Three Tri-Rivers Conference opponents overcame the Midland Eagles in recent boys basketball action.

     Midland (2-15, 2-18) traveled to play Calamus-Wheatland Jan. 23, and lost 69-33. The Warriors jumped to a 37-10 halftime lead. Iziek Soper led Midland with 13 points, along with six rebounds. Britan Martens added 12 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Kyle Paulsen and Hunter Brown had two steals apiece, and Wilson Buckwalter made three assists.

     On Jan. 26, the Eagles played at Easton Valley, and lost 75-41. The River Hawks took a 24-10 first quarter lead, and outscored Midland in each of the four quarters. Martens led the Eagles with 13 points, while Ethan Kaftan and Paulsen had six apiece. Austin Smith made three assists; Carsen Rupp had two.

     At home against Lisbon Jan. 30, Midland lost 73-40 despite a 16-point game from Soper. The freshman shot 7-for-11 from the field, and collected four rebounds. Carsen Rupp scored six points. Smith made four assists.
