Midland had its first wrestling event of 2020 the Solon duals tournament Jan. 4. The Eagles picked up two wins and three losses, beating Keokuk 54-24 and Vinton-Shellsburg 47-21. The losses were to Solon (54-30), Anamosa (45-27) and Muscatine (58-18).

Midland ran up against a tough Bellevue Marquette team to begin the new year Jan. 3 in Bellevue, and lost by a score of 49-11.

Marquette, ranked third in the state in Class 1A, took a 23-8 lead by halftime.

“They have three six-footers and play a physical style that we had to make an effort to match,” Midland coach Jason Soper said. “Their bigs were just too much for us.”

It didn’t help that the Eagles will be without Ella Rupp for the rest of the season due to a knee injury suffered in December.

“Our biggest challenge all season has been offensive proficiency, and will be moving forward,” Soper said. “I know we will get better offensively, and we have maintained the mindset that we will play our best ball at the end of the season.”

Elizabeth Soper led the Eagles with three points.
