Eagles fall twice, defeat Lisbon

Boys basketball

     Three games opened the new year for the Midland High School boys basketball team, including one win.

     Midland (2-4, 3-10) came back from the holiday break with an 82-47 home loss to Clinton Prince of Peace Jan. 4. Two Eagles scored in double figures; Hunter Brown was 6-for-11 from the field and had 16 points, while Britan Martens came off the bench to score 11 points and grab six rebounds. Iziek Soper had eight rebounds. Carsen Rupp had three assists.

     On Jan. 8, Martens scored 16 points and Soper had 10 rebounds, but the Eagles lost a 69-40 decision to Easton Valley in Wyoming. The River Hawks took control with a 25-7 second quarter. Getting five rebounds apiece for Midland were Ethan Kaftan, Brown and Martens.

     The Eagles bounced back with a 58-54 win over Lisbon, outscoring the Lions 33-28 in the second half to pull out the win. Martens had 20 points and seven rebounds in the game. Brown had 15 points and four steals. Carsen Rupp had 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Peyton Rupp grabbed eight rebounds.

     Prior to the holidays, the Eagles played host to Tipton Dec. 10, and lost 64-38. Carsen Rupp led the team in scoring with seven points, and Wilson Buckwalter added six. Soper had seven rebounds, Kaftan had six and Jensen Dodge had five. Dodge also blocked two shots.

     On Dec. 14, Midland played host to Bellevue Marquette, and lost 56-42. A 31-19 first half advantage was key to the win for the Mohawks. Midland was led by Martens with 14 points. Kaften had nine points and eight rebounds, while Soper had six points and 12 rebounds. Buckwalter had five points and four steals.

     At Monticello Dec. 15, Midland fell behind 29-10 in the first half and wound up losing 58-28. Buckwalter and Kaftan had eight points apiece, and Kaftan grabbed six rebounds.

     Midland then played host to Calamus-Wheatland Dec. 18, and lost 84-45. Martens scored 21 points, and was 8-for-14 shooting from the field and 5-for-8 from three-point range. Kaftan had eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Soper had seven rebounds. Carsen Rupp had three assists.

     The Eagles traveled to Springville to face Cedar Valley Christian Dec. 21, and scored a 76-45 victory. Scoring in double figures for Midland were Martens with 18 points, Buckwalter with 17 and Kaftan with 12. Brown had eight rebounds. Buckwalter made six assists, and Carsen Rupp had five assists.

 

Wrestling

     Midland had a pair of wrestling meets last week, including a double dual and a tournament.

     The Eagles wrestled in a double dual meet Jan. 10 at Maquoketa Valley, and split their two matches, beating Central City 48-12 and losing to Maquoketa Valley 48-33.

     Brett Schoenherr went 2-0 at 220 pounds with a pin and a decision. Griffin Gravel and Cayden Miller also scored pin victories during the meet.

     On Jan. 12, Midland traveled to the Cascade Tournament, where it finished fifth of 14 schools with 85 points.

     The Eagles had two champions. Damon Huston scored a pin and two decisions to win the 106-pound title, and Schoenherr won the 220 crown with two pins and a decision. Gravel placed second at 126, and Carson Hunter was fifth at 145.

 

Girls basketball

     Midland (5-2, 7-7) played host to Easton Valley Jan. 8, and lost 37-34, as the River Hawks outscored Midland 12-6 in the fourth quarter. Drew Jensen had 11 points and two blocks for the Eagles, Morgan Soper added eight points, Mikayla Dosland had six, and Kirstin Schaefer had five points and three steals. Delanie Uppena led the team in rebounds with nine.

     The Eagles got back in the win column Jan. 11, with a 42-29 home win over Lisbon. Jensen and Dosland scored 12 points apiece to pace Midland. Jensen had four assists, and was one of three Eagles to make two steals, along with Allison Paulsen and Dosland. Uppena had nine rebounds, while Ella Rupp and Arianna Hacke had five apiece.
