Eagles reach regional duals, send seven to districts

MIDLAND RECAP

Wrestling

Seven district qualifiers and a history-making trip to the regional duals made the Class 1A sectional wrestling tournament a memorable one for the Midland Eagles.

Lisbon won the team title with 256 points, Midland was second with 181, and Iowa City Regina finished third with 156. The meet was held Saturday, Feb. 4 at Lisbon.

By finishing in the top two, Midland qualified for the Class 1A Regional Duals for the first time in school history. The Eagles were scheduled to face Lisbon in a team regional semifinal Feb. 7 at Lisbon.

Individually, the Eagles had two champions and five runners-up.

Jalen Huston was the champion at 182 pounds, winning his match in the finals 4-1 over Harrison Goedken of Iowa City Regina.

Also winning was Brett Schoenherr at 220 pounds, earning a 3-2 win over Logan O’Connor of Lisbon in the finals.

Five Eagles had to win wrestleback matches in order to advance, and did so. They included Slayder Hansen at 113, Griffen Gravel at 126, Kasper Heiken at 132, Landon Hunter at 152 and Ty’Rique Turman at 285.

Finishing third were Trevor Gudenkauf at 120 and Brayden Gravel at 138. Brenden Rickets was fourth at 145; William Klingenberg finished fifth at 170.

The seven qualifiers will compete in the Class 1A district tournament Saturday, Feb. 11 at Wilton, starting at noon.

Girls basketball

Midland recovered from a Friday loss to score a big Tuesday win in recent girls basketball action.

Midland played host to Cedar Valley Christian Jan. 27, and was handed a 43-34 defeat. Drew Jensen led the Eagles with 13 points. Delanie Uppena grabbed 19 rebounds. Callie Markmann and Jensen had four steals apiece.

At home against Calamus-Wheatland Jan. 31, the Eagles won 51-46, as Jensen led the team with 25 points.

“This was by far our best full game of the year,” Midland coach Nathan Becker said. “We stayed much more disciplined defensively, and we made really big shots down the stretch.”

Midland trailed 44-39 with less than four minutes to go, but tied it on a three-point basket by Mikayla Dosland and a long two-pointer by Emma Paulsen.

The Eagles took a one-point lead on a three-point play by Jensen, and made enough free throws the rest of the way to win it.

Delanie Uppena pulled down 15 rebounds, and Libertie Uppena blocked five shots. Callie Markmann had seven rebounds and four assists. Jensen had four steals.

“Every time we scored or had a good play, everyone on the bench was jumping up and down, going crazy, especially in the fourth quarter,” Becker said. “It takes everyone to win, and everyone contributed.”
