With a regular season-ending 36-18 home win over Lansing Kee Oct. 25, the Midland High School football team secured a 7-2 record for the season, including 5-2 in district play.

That finish was good enough for Midland to earn an at-large bid to the Eight-man state football playoffs, finishing 14th in the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI).

The Eagles will play at HLV of Victor in a first round game Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.

Against Kee, Midland pulled away with a 16-point fourth quarter. Britan Martens completed 11 of 19 passes for 186 yards, and two touchdowns, both to Jensen Dodge, who had 10 receptions for 181 yards. Alex Smith carried the ball eight times for 90 yards and a touchdown. Martens also ran for two scores.

Defensively, Isiek Soper made 12 tackles, while Austin Weinschenk and Smith had 10 apiece.

Cross country

Midland totaled 472 points and finished 20th at the Class 1A State Qualifying Cross Country Meet Oct. 24 in Iowa City.

The Eagle boys were led by Trent Rickels, who finished 40th in 19:09.44. Tanner Stoll was 97th in 21:11.30, Ethan Milder was 117th in 21:58.75, Milo Smith was 124th in 22:40.72, and Bryce Rushford was 130th in 23:08.15.

“One goal we met this year was just to have a scoring boys’ team,” Midland coach Jon Eganhouse said. “Most of the runners were also able to drop times in each event. I would like to see us score more in the middle of the pack, but that will be our goal for next year.”

Alyssa Brown was the lone girl to run for Midland, finishing 75th in 28:18.52.

“Alyssa started late this year, but was able to take considerable time off from the start of the season,” Eganhouse said.

Prior to the state qualifying meet, the Eagles competed in the Tri-Rivers Conference Meet Oct. 17 at Springville.

The Midland boys finished ninth in the meet, with a score of 193. Calamus-Wheatland was the boys’ champion with 23, Maquoketa Valley finished second with 39, and Starmont was third with 88.

Rickels was the top Eagle boy, finishing 19th in a time of 19:02.2. Smith was 37th in 20:49.0, Stoll took 38th in 20:49.2, Milder finished 48th in 22:08.1, and Rushford was 51st in 24:26.0.
