Eagles shine in quad, DeWitt tournament

MIDLAND RECAP

Wrestling

Midland enjoyed plenty of wrestling success in a pair of events last week.

Midland started the week with a quadrangular meet at Edgewood-Colesburg Dec. 19, winning two of three duals. The Eagles defeated Bellevue 45-21, topped Ed-Co 39-27, and lost to Lisbon 68-7.

Cayden Miller won all three of his matches, pinning two opponents and scoring a major decision. Damon Huston was 3-0 with a pin, and Caden Ballou went 2-1 with a pin. Pinning one opponent apiece were Shayden Hansen, Carson Hunter, Jared Crock and Logan Bicknese.

The Eagles then competed in the DeWitt Central Invitational Dec. 21, finishing fifth of 10 teams with 105.5 points. Camanche edged DeWitt Central, 159 to 158, for the title.

Winning championships for Midland were Huston at 126 pounds and Ballou at 145. Hunter was second at 152, and Miller was the 160-pound runner-up.

Boys basketball

The Midland boys basketball team traveled to Tipton for a non-conference game Dec. 16, and lost 48-31. Iziek Soper led Midland (1-5) with 18 points and eight rebounds. Zain Sauer scored six points. Jensen Dodge made four steals, and Wilson Buckwalter had three assists.

“We were shorthanded again, not having our leading scorer (Britan Martens),” Midland coach Dalton Harms said. “We battled on defense, but our lack of height really showed itself.”

Girls basketball

Midland played a non-conference contest at Tipton Dec. 16, and lost 54-42, thanks to the Tigers’ 28-19 scoring edge in the second half. Allison Paulsen had a big night for the Eagles (0-1, 1-6), scoring 19 points, grabbing six rebounds and blocking two shots. Kirstin Schaefer had 15 points. Madisyn Kreel came off the bench and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Getting three steals apiece were Ella Rupp, Elizabeth Soper and Schaefer.

“Not that we’re satisfied with defeat, but I was extremely proud of each one of the girls for stepping up, and we played arguably our best game to date,” Midland coach Jason Soper said. “We had our lowest turnover amount all year, and Allison Paulsen had a phenomenal game.”

On Dec. 19, the Eagles played a rare Thursday night game at Central City, and lost 50-16. Midland suffered another loss, as Ella Rupp left early in the game with a knee injury. Her status for the rest of the season was questionable at press time.

“Our Lady Eagles were extremely rattled after that,” coach Soper said. “Basically we were in survival mode to game’s end, just trying to spare any further injuries.”

Paulsen led the Eagles with seven points.
