Eagles sweep Central City meet

Wrestling

     Midland scored a pair of convincing victories in a double dual wrestling meet Jan. 16 at Central City. The Eagles defeated Maquoketa Valley 54-18, and topped Central City 66-6.

     Against MV, the Eagles got a pin victory from Jared Crock at 138 pounds, and won eight other matches by forfeit.

     In the Central City match, Crock again won by pin, as did Caden Ballou at 145 pounds. Midland picked up nine forfeit victories in that dual.

 

Girls basketball

     After a rough first quarter, in which they fell behind 25-6, the Eagles performed better the rest of the way in a 62-29 loss at Clinton Prince of Peace Jan. 14.

     “We did a better job in all aspects of the game except rebounding,” Midland coach Jason Soper said. “I thought we did a nice job handling their press and had good offensive movement.”

     Allison Paulsen and Amaya Terrell scored eight points apiece for the Eagles (0-5, 1-10). Kristin Schaefer added five points and three steals. Arianna Hacke had five assists.

     At Easton Valley Jan. 16, the Eagles fell 66-40. The River Hawks jumped to a 24-5 first quarter lead and held the advantage the rest of the way. Hacke scored 10 points and made eight rebounds, four assists and four steals for Midland. Terrell had 10 points of her own, and Elizabeth Soper scored seven points and had four steals. Paulsen had six points, six rebounds, five assists and two blocks.
