Eagles top pair of TRC foes

Girls basketball

     It was a successful week for the Midland High School girls basketball team, which won a pair of Tri-Rivers Conference games.

     The Eagles (7-8, 7-10) played host to Edgewood-Colesburg on Jan. 9, and scored a 54-35 victory. Mikayla Dosland scored 20 points, shooting 6-for-11 from three-point range. Drew Jensen added 12 points, Calli Markmann had 10, and Delanie Uppena scored eight. Jensen and Markmann had five assists each, and Markmann added seven rebounds and six steals.

     “Mikayla scored 11 straight points for us in the second quarter to really help us get separation,” Midland coach Nathan Becker said. “We got the ball to Calli in the middle of the defense and she made a lot of plays for us.

     “We are getting closer to playing complete games.”

     On Jan. 12, Midland traveled to Central City and picked up a 61-42 victory. A 20-0 run in the second quarter helped Midland to a 34-18 halftime lead. Markmann had a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with eight assists and six steals. Uppena had 13 points and eight rebounds. Emma Vacek shot 5-for-7 from the field and scored 10 points, along with six rebounds. Jensen had five rebounds and four assists.

 

Boys basketball

     Three Tri-Rivers Conference games were part of a four-game stretch for the Midland boys basketball team.

     At Springville Jan. 5, the Eagles (1-11, 1-14) lost 67-46. Midland got off to a strong start, taking a 21-15 lead after the first quarter, but was outscored 16-2 in the second period and trailed from then on. Britan Martans scored 18 points for the Eagles, and Carsen Rupp had 10 points and eight rebounds. Carter Mohr had a team-high nine rebounds, and Wilson Buckwalter had four assists.

     On Jan. 6, the Eagles played a non-conference home game against Durant, and lost 60-28. Ethan Kaftan came off the bench to lead Midland in scoring, with 11 points. Hunter Brown scored five points. Carsen Rupp had four rebounds. Buckwalter made two assists.

     Midland played host to Edgewood-Colesburg Jan. 9, and suffered a 77-29 loss. The Vikings jumped to a 54-18 lead by halftime. Scoring leaders for the Eagles included Carter Mohr with seven points, Carsen Rupp and Britan Martens with six apiece. Carsen Rupp also had four assists and three steals.

     Next, the Eagles played at Central City Jan. 12, and lost 60-18. Carsen Rupp and Kyle Paulsen had six points each for Midland. Iziek Soper grabbed six rebounds.

 

Wrestling

     Two meets kept the Midland High School wrestling team occupied last week.

     The Eagles traveled to Lisbon for a quadrangular meet Jan. 11, and went 1-2 as a team. Midland defeated North Linn 41-24, but lost to Lisbon 57-15 and to Maquoketa Valley 57-24.

     Griffin Gravel went 2-0 for the night with a pin and a decision. Damon Huston was 3-0 with two pins and a forfeit victory. Trevor Gudenkauf went 2-1, winning by pin and technical fall.

     On Saturday, Jan. 13, the Eagles took eighth place out of 13 teams at the Cascade Invitational, totaling 80 points. Western Dubuque was the team champion with 191.

     Brett Schoenherr had the highest finish for Midland, taking second place at 220 pounds. Finishing third were Huston at 106, Gudenkauf at 126 and Gravel at 132. Carson Hunter was fourth at 138.
