Early leads are keys in 1-2 start for Panthers

Getting early leads and taking advantage of having runners on base proved to be important factors – both ways – as the Monticello High School softball team played a doubleheader May 24 at Camanche.

These were the second and third games of the 2018 season for the Panthers, who opened with a 7-4 non-conference loss at Marion May 21. Thus, Monticello opened the season with a 1-2 record, including 1-1 in the River Valley Conference.

At Camanche, Monticello won the first game 11-6 after taking a 4-0 lead through two innings. In the second game it was nearly the opposite; the Indians jumped to a 4-1 lead through three innings and went on to win 11-1 in six.

“We did a much better job defensively (than in the Marion game), and took advantage of our scoring opportunities,” Monticello coach Bret McDonald said.

The Panthers also had the bats working. Caitlyn Cruise hit two solo home runs, and Jaelynn Kraus and Lauren Ries clouted one apiece. Ries’ home run, a three-run shot, came at a key time; it opened an 11-4 lead after Camanche had closed the early gap.

“That was a big difference-maker,” McDonald said.

In all, Monticello had nine hits. Cruise pitched for the win, allowing nine hits, striking out three and walking one.

In the second game, a home run by Ries tied the game 1-1 in the second inning, but Camanche scored three in the third inning and led the rest of the way. Monticello left eight runners on base, including seven over the first three innings.

“It was exactly the opposite (of the first game),” coach McDonald said. “We didn’t take advantage of our scoring opportunities, and made some mistakes defensively.”

Monticello was held to four hits. Kraus and Cruise shared pitching duties for the Panthers.

Three days earlier, Monticello opened the season at Marion. The Panthers led 1-0 through three innings, but Marion scored three runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth. A two-run, seventh inning rally that included an RBI double by Ries fell short. Cruise pitched and took the loss.

Taylor McDonald batted 3-for-3 and stole two bases. Ries was 2-for-4 with two doubles

“Overall I thought we played pretty well for our first game out,” Monticello coach Bret McDonald said. “The fourth and fifth innings bit us a little bit.”
