East Buchanan rallies past MV in regional

VOLLEYBALL

     Maquoketa Valley stormed to a 25-20 win in the first set of a regional quarterfinal volleyball match against East Buchanan, but the Buccaneers rallied to win the next three, and the match.

     The Wildcats ended up with a 25-20, 11-25, 24-26, 23-25 defeat in the Class 2A, Region 7 quarterfinal match Monday, Oct. 23 at Maquoketa Valley in Delhi.

     It was a strong match defensively for the Wildcats, who totaled 13 blocks and 77 digs. Leading the team in blocks were Payton Ries with five, Maci Freiburger with three, Macy Hoeger and Emerson Whittenbaugh with two apiece.

     Four MV players reached double digits in digs: Abby Holtz with 16, Freiburger with 11, Macy Hoeger and Brooke Wilson with 10 apiece. Olivia Hoeger and Whittenbaugh contributed seven digs each, Madison Imler had six and Maddy Anderegg had five.

     Maquoketa Valley also recorded 32 kills, led by Freiburger with eight, Ries and Whittenbaugh with seven apiece. Anderegg had nine assists, and Holtz had eight.

     Serving was also a strong suit for the Wildcats, who served 92.8 percent with 10 aces. Ries was 17-for-17 with five aces, Anderegg was 19-for-19 with two aces, and Macy Hoeger was 11-for-12 with two aces. Holtz was 10-for-10.

     The Wildcats finished in a tie for second place in the Tri-Rivers Conference West Division with a 4-2 record, and were 13-16 overall.
