Education is a critical issue

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

I write this letter to urge you to vote yes on the Monticello School bond issue on Sept. 11.

Our family moved to Monticello 50 years ago, and I was privileged to serve under Supt. Boyd Shannon for two years. I have been so lucky to serve in Iowa schools for 40 years plus 10 more in part-time jobs. We started in a 50-student high school in Missouri. We returned to Monticello in 2006, due to family and because we know this as a great place to live.

Our three daughters and several grandchildren graduated from Monticello High School and received an excellent education, which enabled them to succeed later in life. Monticello School has always been known for excellence. My family was involved in public education, so I have decades of experience and I believe we have had some of the finest employees I have known, including recently-passed Norm Hinrichs, who was a loyal and dedicated employee working for the benefit of Monticello young people for decades.

We need to keep our excellent reputation to attract young citizens. Education is a critical factor in keeping our community strong.

I have been involved in many bond issues and it takes the entire community to achieve the super majority needed. Every time an issue is voted on, the cost is higher than before.

     Let’s get it done now!

Steve Williams
