Eighth-graders sweep opponents

Eighth-grade

     Monticello’s eighth-grade boys basketball teams faced three opponents in recent action, and came away with nothing but victories.

     The Panthers played two games at Northeast of Goose Lake, and won both of them. The A team scored a 53-19 win, as Tate Petersen scored 21 points and Gage Guilford added 14. Dylan Roher and Ian Temple had five points apiece, Chesney Capron added four, Austin Kurt and Deacon Besler had two apiece.

     The B team won 26-16, led by Christian Castillo’s 13 points. Cord Nietert added six, Joel Arduser scored five, and Nathan Sauser had two points.

     On Feb. 8, the Panthers played three game at Anamosa, winning them all. First, the A team picked up a 50-27 win. Three Panthers scored in double figures: Guilford and Petersen with 15 apiece, and Roher with 11. Temple had three points, while Kyler Husmann, Kurt and Castillo had two apiece.

     In the B game, Monticello won 35-31. Besler led the way with 13 points, Cord Nietert and Husmann had eight apiece, and Elias Etzel, Kole Weber and Castillo had two each.

     The Panthers also won the C game, 27-4. Scoring were Weber with 12, Nathan Sauser with nine, Cole Nietert with four and Etzel with two.

     Monticello played host to Bellevue Feb. 14, winning two games. The A team earned a 42-15 win, led by Roher with 15 points and Petersen with 10. Guilford scored six, Temple had five, Kurt had three, Husmann had two, and Besler had one.

     Caelum Jones scored nine points as the B team won 18-13. Connor Sauser and Weber chipped in four points each, Nathan Sauser had two, and Arduser had one.

 

Seventh-grade

     Monticello played host to Northeast of Goose Lake in a seventh-grade boys basketball doubleheader Feb. 4. The Red team won 45-26. After leading 16-12 at halftime, the Red was able to pull away with good defense in the second half.

     The White team won 49-1. Northeast was scoreless until making a free throw in the final minute.

     Earlier, the Monticello teams swept two games at Cascade Jan. 21. The Red used its size advantage to score a 47-20 victory. The White won 11-3 in a 10-minute game.
