Equestrian center adds to fairgrounds, community

Express Editorial

Last week, the Express ran an article about the Great Jones County Fair’s newest project: the equestrian center.

We certainly have a fantastic fairgrounds here in Monticello, Iowa, something to be proud of for sure!

In just a decade, so many changes for the better have taken place at the county fairgrounds: a permanent stage, an expanded beverage (beer) tent, improvements to the original fair office building, and the facility that brought the fair and Iowa State Extension together, the Youth Development Center.

We are fortunate to have an ever-growing fair in many aspects, from the crowd the fair attracts day and night during the “Five Best Days of Summer,” to the eclectic musicians who have graced us with their presence, to the facilities on the grounds. And the community has certainly stood behind and supported the fair’s efforts through the years.

This broad-range support is evident when you walk into the Youth Development Center and see the wall of donors and supporters who came together to bring the facility to life.

The YDC has been the home for so many community and countywide events since it opened, a jewel in the community.

If you’ve ever taken in a concert on the track (mud and all), waited hours to get a front-row view of Tim McGraw, Eric Church, or Carrie Underwood, you know how majestic that stage truly is. You crane your neck to get the perfect view (some might beg to differ).

And now the equestrian center will add grandeur to the fairgrounds this summer. And if you think that since the announcement, this seems like a fast turn-around, that is just how the fair operates! Goals are attainable. Projects push forward and become realities.

The fair brings people to Monticello and Jones County. Like any business, the GJCF contributes to the local economy in many ways. Adding to its facilities will only increase that time and again.

From the Express’ perspective, the equestrian center is a welcome addition. It means an additional 4-H food stand, more restrooms, and an additional escape from the scorching heat and humidity. Trust us when we tell you that the fairgrounds during the week of the fair can never have enough bathrooms and air-conditioned facilities. (K.N.B.)
