Facts point to Bradley’s extreme stance on abortion

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

Facts don't lie but lies need to be called out.

In his recent letter, Michael Davies accuses Democrats of telling "lies" about Rep. Steve Bradley's extreme stance on abortion. I would advise Mr. Davies to take the time to check the facts before spreading misinformation in print.

Here are the facts which Mr. Davies might wish to verify:

   1. Rep. Bradley co-sponsored HF 2256 which was filed on Feb. 1, 2024.

   2. HF 2256 would ban abortions from the moment of fertilization with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the health of the mother. It also provides for the prosecution and jailing of mothers and doctors.

   3. He also voted down an amendment to protect children under 12 years of age from having to carry a pregnancy to term (Amendment H-1371 to HF 732 on July 11, 2023).

   4. In addition, he voted to ban IVF treatments (HF 2575 on March 7, 2024). I suggest to Mr. Davies that these represent pretty extreme positions. Even pro-life leaders labeled Bradley's HF 2256 as "horrific" (see "A Reality Check on HF 2256" in the Feb. 15, 2024, edition of the Iowa Standard).

Bradley's opponent, Andy McKean, supports reasonable abortion restrictions with exceptions for rape, incest, the life and health of the mother, and fetal abnormalities incompatible with life.
