Fareway president inducted into IGIA Hall of Fame

     The Iowa Grocery Industry Association announced the winners of its 2018 Hall of Fame awards, honoring champions of Iowa’s grocery industry. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the organization’s Annual Hall of Fame Dinner, which will be held on Nov. 7 in Altoona.

     Heading the list of honorees, Kyle J. Krause, chairman and CEO for Kum & Go, has been named Retailer of the Year. The organization will also honor Frederick R. Greiner, president and COO, Fareway Stores Inc. with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling Co. has been named Supplier of the Year, while longtime IGIA photographer Kevin “Regs” Ruegsegger, is receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award. In recognition of his efforts spearheading legislation to protect retailers and consumers in the area of electronic payment processing, Dan Kramer, senior vice president of government and community affairs for SHAZAM, has been honored with the 2018 Legislative Leadership Award.

     The Hall of Fame selection committee, made up of IGIA board members, reviews peer nominations and makes final selections based upon the nominee’s character, qualifications and contributions to the grocery industry. All award recipients will be inducted into the Iowa Grocery Industry Hall of Fame at the IGIA Hall of Fame Dinner, Nov. 7.

Greiner receives Lifetime Achievement Award

     Frederick Greiner, president and COO, Fareway Stores Inc., grew up in Independence, Iowa, and began working at Fareway as a carryout/stocker at age 16. In 1972, he served in the military for two years as a nuclear weapons technician. Greiner turned down a promising career in the military to return to Fareway in 1974 and began moving through the ranks. He worked as an assistant manager in the Winterset, Cherokee and Boone, Iowa, stores before being made store manager of the Boone store. In 1989, he moved to the corporate office where he served as a district supervisor until being promoted to vice president in 1993. A promotion to senior vice president followed in 2000. In 2001, Greiner’s climb escalated quickly to executive president and COO in 2006.

     Throughout his 50 years with Fareway, Greiner has played an integral part in the company’s success. Today, Fareway has 121 grocery store locations in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota.

     Greiner leaves a lasting impression on the company as he prepares to retire on Sept. 1 of this year.
