Farmers sought for study

Researchers at The University of Iowa are conducting a research study sponsored by the Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health, a center funded by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

The purpose of the study is to better understand how drivers interact with farm equipment on the roadway with the goal of increasing road safety for everyone. They are currently looking for farm equipment operators in the Monticello area who are willing to assist us with this research study.

If you are interested, your involvement would include placing a data recorder on the rear of your farm equipment. The device collects GPS data and records video of traffic approaching the equipment from the rear. The instruments are housed in a case a little larger than a cereal box. Thus far, they have mounted the case using high powered magnets with no issues. The research team would need to come out periodically (typically once a week) to change out the batteries in the device, which should only take a few minutes.

The focus of this study is on the behavior of the other traffic, not the driver of the farm equipment. Therefore, they are especially interested in working with operators who need to travel several miles on public roads between their fields and their storage facilities and/or frequently travel on high-volume roadways. Compensation for your involvement will be provided. They plan to work with operators for the next 2-3 seasons. However, if you decide to assist with the study, you may discontinue your assistance at any time.
