Feedlot forums are scheduled

Although feedlot profit margins are expected to improve in 2017, many producers are still recovering from a couple of rough years. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Association has three educational events scheduled for feedlot operators in March to help cattle producers minimize costs and maximize profits.

The forum closest to Monticello will be Wednesday, March 15, 4-9:30 p.m. at Country Junction Restaurant in Dyersville.

Other forums will be March 15, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Pub at the Pinicon in New Hampton; and Thursday, March 16, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Buzzy’s in Welton.

The forums are free of charge and include a complimentary meal.

Speakers include Jamey Kohake, a cattle feeder and broker for Paragon Investments. He has more than 15 years of experience advising grain and livestock producers on price trends and marketing strategies. He will provide a timely market outlook and risk management session for producers.

Bunk management and nutrition will be discussed by Dr. Alfredo DiConstanzo, of the University of Minnesota. Dr. DiConstanzo is an expert on nutrition management that maximizes economic efficiency.

Dr. Lee Schulz, Iowa State University, will review marketing options for fed cattle. “There is no 'best' pricing method for all producers, but understanding how live weight, dressed weight, grid and formula prices are related can help cattle producers decide which form of fed cattle pricing may be most profitable for them," says Dr. Schulz.

Contact the ICA office at 515-296-2266 to RSVP. For more information about Feedlot Forums visit www.iacattlemen.org.

ICA will also hold pasture walks and other educational events around the state later this year in order to provide each segment of the cattle industry information on critical topics.
