Two days. Five dual matches. All wins.

The Monticello High School wrestling team took down five opponents last week to up its dual meet record to 7-0.

The first two of those wins came in a double dual Dec. 10 at Mid-Prairie, where the Panthers defeated the host school 46-36, and then controlled Iowa City Regina 57-21.

The Panthers staged a remarkable comeback in the Mid-Prairie match. Trailing 36-10, Monticello won the final six matches, from the 106 to 138 weight classes, to take the match. Those wins including pins by Kale Hansen, Mark Sunlin and Ethan Tallman, along with three forfeit victories.

“We are a very solid team in the lower weights,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “Mark Sunlin was back from an injury and had a solid night. Owen Thomas had a big win against Regina.

Tyler Luensman and Sunlin each had two pin victories, and were the only Panthers to go 2-0 for the night without the benefit of a forfeit.

Then came a quadrangular meet at Oelwein the next night, Dec. 11. This time, the Panthers toppled Starmont by a score of 56-24, Edgewood-Colesburg 66-9, and Oelwein 45-33.

“We had some ups and downs throughout the night in some individual matchups,” the coach said. “We need to be confident to wrestle six minutes, hard, every time we step on the mat.”

In the Oelwein match, the Huskies won two matches by forfeit and the Panthers took one. Of the 11 matches on the mat, Monticello won seven of them. A fall by Kain Luensman in the final match sealed the win. Luensman, by the way, now has 144 career victories.

“Oelwein was our best dual because we had no room for upsets,” coach Luensman said. “We had to battle hard every match.”

Going 3-0 for the night were Tyler Luensman, Bo Kramer, Cael Sampson, Owen Ray, Kain Luensman and Hansen.

“Elias Etzel had a nice win against Starmont, and Kale Hansen beat a solid kid from Ed-Co. Cael Sampson had a solid night as well,” the coach said.

“We have some guys that don’t have a ton of wins yet, but without them I guarantee we wouldn’t be undefeated at this point. We have guys moving weights and giving up weight in certain situations.”
