Five Eagles are top-three at TRC

Wrestling

     Midland scored 89 points and finished sixth in the Tri-Rivers Conference Wrestling Tournament Saturday, Jan. 28 at North Linn, with five of its wrestlers finishing in the top three individually.

     Lisbon won the tournament championship with 242 points, North Linn was second with 144 and Alburnett place third with 136.

     The Eagles didn’t have any conference champions, but Landon Hunter finished second at 152 pounds.    

     Taking third place were Trevor Gudenkauf at 120 pounds, Griffen Gravel at 126, Kasper Heiken at 132 and Ty’Rique Turman at 285.

     In fourth was Brayden Gravel at 138. Brett Schoenherr finished fifth at 220, and Jalen Huston was sixth at 160.

     “One of my favorite parts of coaching is seeing kids achieve the most out of every match and fight hard to the end,” Midland coach Cody Goble said. “The best part is, all these kids are under-the-radar hardnosed kids that will grind and find ways to win.”

 

Boys basketball

     Midland picked up two wins in four recent Tri-Rivers Conference boys basketball games.

     The Eagles (4-5, 5-13) played host to Clinton Prince of Peace Jan. 17, and pulled out a 44-43 victory, outscoring POP 15-6 in the fourth quarter. Alex Martens had 15 points and 20 rebounds for a double-double. Connor Harms added 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Fisher Bisinger and Kyle Paulsen also had three assists apiece.

     Next, the Eagles played at Calamus-Wheatland Jan. 19, and lost 57-49. Bisinger scored 18 points to pace Midland, and Martens had 17 points and five rebounds. Trace Jensen had five rebounds and five steals.

     The Eagles played host to Easton Valley Jan. 24, and fell by a score of 44-38. Martens had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Bisinger had 10 points and seven boards. Martens also made four steals.

     On Jan. 27, Midland played host to Cedar Valley Christian and scored a 59-32 win. A big start was key to the victory, as Midland jumped to a 23-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. Harms scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds; Martens had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with five steals. Skylar Mullins scored nine points and Jensen had eight.

 

Girls basketball

     A win over Clinton Prince of Peace was the highlight of a recent four-game stretch for the Midland girls basketball team.

     The Eagles (3-5, 3-16) played host to Prince of Peace Jan. 17, and scored a 47-16 victory. The Eagles led by 16 at halftime, then outscored POP 23-8 in the second half. Drew Jensen led the Eagles in scoring with 12 points, and had a team-high nine steals. Delanie Uppena had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, along with five steals. Libertie Uppena had 10 points. Callie Markmann had 13 rebounds and seven steals.

     At Calamus-Wheatland Jan. 19, Midland lost 52-44. Jensen scored 16 points, and Markmann had 11 points and six steals. Libertie Uppena had eight points and 11 rebounds. Delanie Uppena grabbed nine rebounds. Emma Paulsen made four steals.

     The Eagles then played at North Linn Jan. 20, and suffered a 52-18 loss. Libertie Uppena had seven points and seven rebounds for Midland, and Jensen had six points. Markmann and Paulsen made three steals apiece.

     Next, Midland played host to Easton Valley Jan. 24, and lost 58-48. Libertie Uppena scored 11 points for the Eagles. Sydney Stender added nine points, while Markmann and Jensen had eight points each. Delanie Uppena had six points and 14 rebounds. Markmann and Jensen each made four steals.
