October is National Principals Month. The Monticello Community School District and Sacred Heart Catholic School are fortunate to have four principals proudly serving the families and students of this community. For the next several weeks, the Express will spotlight each principal, thanking them for their dedication.

Denny Folken is in his 18th year working as Monticello Elementary principal. Overall, he’s been in education for 29 years.

“I enjoy working with people of all ages,” expressed Folken as to what he enjoys about being a principal. “I enjoy the process of collaboratively solving problems. It’s also great to see students progress from year to year as well as over longer periods of time.”

Folken praised Monticello as a great place to raise a family, having raised his three kids here with wife, Lisa: Kyle, 22; Paige, 20; and Cade, 18.

“We have a very talented, caring, and hard-working staff that is always moving forward and learning new things,” Folken said of the MCSD. “We also have great support from our parents, school board, and community.”

Folken enjoys sports, such as watching the NFL, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and NASCAR, and playing golf.

His hobbies also include walking, hiking, and sightseeing.

Something many may not know about Folken is the fact that he’s attended four NASCAR races, with the Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee being his favorite thus far.

“In 2002, I also drove a racecar around Kansas Speedway as part of the Richard Petty Driving Experience,” shared Folken. “I hope to do that again someday because it was awesome!”
