In a season of milestones, the Monticello High School wrestling team notched another one in a five-team round robin meet Jan. 28 at North Fayette Valley in West Union.

That came from Kain Luensman, who became Monticello’s all-time career wins leader during a 4-0 night. His first match, a pin of North Fayette Valley’s Jesse Grimes in 31 seconds, pushed him past Chase Luensman as the all-time leader. Kain finished the night with 168 career wins. He also tied Logan Felton for career falls, at 103.

“These are great milestones for Kain,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “The consistency of winning he has done the past four years, and battling through injuries, is why he now holds this record. We are very proud of Kain and all his accomplishments.”

There was much to celebrate from a team standpoint as well, as the Panthers defeated four opponents, taking down North Fayette Valley 40-34, Central Elkader 48-30, Edgewood-Colesburg 60-15, and Maquoketa Valley 54-27.

Those wins finished Monticello’s dual meet season with a 23-4 record.

“It wasn’t our greatest night of wrestling, but everyone battled hard and fought,” coach Luensman said. “I’m always proud of our team and how someone new seems to step up every night to help us be successful.”

Along with Kain Luensman’s pin against NFV, the Panthers also got a fall by Bo Kramer, and major decision win from Mark Sunlin. Monticello also picked up four forfeit wins.

Getting pins against Central Elkader were Kramer and Sunlin. Kain Luensman, Tyler Luensman and Cael Sampson won by fall against Ed-Co, while Kramer won a 9-8 decision. Nine forfeit wins carried the Panthers in the win over Maquoketa Valley.

Conference meet

cancelled

Monticello was set to host the River Valley Conference Meet Jan. 30, but poor weather, along with a number of teams backing out to stay healthy for the Feb. 6 sectionals, caused the meet to be cancelled.

“It was a sad day,” coach Luensman said. “We had many individuals with opportunities to win this tournament. If we have learned anything about this year, it is that you have to be flexible and keep moving forward.”

The Panthers will compete in the sectional tournament Feb. 6 at West Delaware, starting at noon.
