Former Wartburg College all-American distance runner Jerry Frawley has been named assistant coach for Cornell College’s cross country and track and field programs.

Frawley, a native of Monticello, Iowa, will coach Cornell’s distance runners for Tashina Steggall, who was elevated to interim head coach for cross country and track & field in July. Frawley began his new duties on campus Aug. 5.

“I’m extremely excited to be back in eastern Iowa and to be a part of Cornell’s cross country and track & field programs,” Frawley said. “The allure of Cornell and its academic and athletic success really piqued my interest. I’m very humbled for the opportunity here and will do my best to keep the ball rolling with the distance runners, picking up for Coach (Dan) Schofer and all the success he had.”

Frawley enjoyed a stellar running career at Wartburg (2013-17) and then spent two seasons as a graduate assistant for cross country and track & field at NAIA’s Grand View University. Grand View’s men claimed Heart of America Athletic Conference outdoor team championships in 2018 and 2019.

While competing for Wartburg, Frawley qualified for the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships as a junior and senior, earning all-conference and all-region status both seasons. Wartburg’s 2016 squad placed 21st at nationals.

On the track, Frawley gained all-America honors in the indoor distance medley relay (fourth place) in 2016. He was a two-time Iowa Conference champion in the distance medley and also earned all-IIAC accolades in the mile and 3000 steeplechase. Frawley helped Wartburg secure four IIAC team titles for indoor and outdoor track & field.

Frawley earned a bachelor’s degree in fitness management with minors in business and leadership from Wartburg in 2017. Frawley received his master’s in sport management from Grand View in 2019.

Frawley played a role in three Iowa state team championships (cross country – 2011, 2012; track & field – 2013) competing at Monticello High School. As a senior, he placed in the top 10 at the state cross country meet. Frawley won a state track title in the 4x800 relay and took runner-up in the 1600 and 3200 races.
