Garden Club, volunteers beautify Fountain Park

Monticello Garden Club members and volunteers spent time last week planting flowers at Fountain Park, as well as by the Community Building and Fairgrounds entrance. The club uses their own funds to purchase the flowers and plants used throughout the city. (Photo submitted)

On May 13, members and volunteers of the Monticello Garden Club, family members and neighbors worked hard to plant new perennials in the three flowerbeds located at Fountain Park (near the Aquatic Center).

In the past, the Garden Club added annuals each year.

With the growing average age of members getting older, it was decided that adding perennials would simplify maintaining colorful flowerbeds to help beautify the community and bless those passing through town.

Although perennials are more expensive, it was thought a good investment because Garden Club members and volunteers won’t have to replant everything each year.

Those doing the work were: Sharon Kell, Kathy Lamont, Rhonda and Norm Meyer, DuWayne and Marilyn Schneiderman, Ruth Zirkelbach, Carol Hagen, Roger Hearn, Mackenzie Kahler, and her three kids Beckett, Anicka, and Gavin.

On the same day, the Garden Club members Sharon and Bob Hasler planted pink and white petunias in the 12 flower boxes at the Community Building. Marty Scharff is taking the lead on designing the flowers for the large planters that flank the entrance of the Jones County Fairgrounds on Maple Street. Those will be planted shortly, weather permitting.

All of the work that the Garden Club performs around the Monticello community is on a volunteer basis, with the Club covering all of the expenses to purchase the flowers and planting materials.
