For the Monticello boys track and field team, it was just nice to get out and compete. It helped even more that the Panthers had some outstanding performances in a pair of meets last week; a co-ed event at Monticello’s Dean Nelson Field, and a meet hosted by Cedar Rapids Washington at Kingston Stadium.

Following the Monticello meet, held March 29, head coach Greg Williams said: “The meet went great considering our guys have not been in one for two years.”

In the home meet, Caden Ungs stood out by being in on three victories, including two of his own. The biggest of those was a 6-foot-7 jump in the high jump, five inches above his previous personal best and the highest jump in the state so far, at this writing.

“What a way for Caden to start the year,” Williams said.

Ungs also won the 110-meter high hurdles, in 16.09 seconds; and anchored the first place shuttle hurdle relay, which also included Eian Weber, Elias Etzel and Grant Hospodarsky.

Jasper Nietert won the 400 in 54.61. Brayden Cleeton was second in both the shot put and the discus.

The Panthers then were sixth among 11 teams in the Wilkinson Relays April 1 at Kingston Stadium, a meet hosted by Cedar Rapids Washington.

“It was a really good team effort to finish sixth as a team competing against all (Class) 4A schools,” coach Williams said. “Brayden Cleeton had a PR (personal record) and first place finish in the shot put. The 800 medley ran really well to finish second out of the first heat. Caleb Sauser and Preston Ries have been jumping well in the long jump.”
