From the ground up

Iowa Working Families Tax Relief Act is the big news last week from the statehouse. This is a bold initiative that will enact the largest tax cut in Iowa history. It provides more than $1 billion a year in overall tax relief and reduces, on average, your taxes by nearly $1,000 per year.

Once again the highlight of the week is the interaction with Iowa students. I had visitors this week from across District 48 from several high school students: West Delaware, Monticello, Maquoketa Valley, Ed-Co, Anamosa and Cedar Rapids Washington.

The students represented themselves very well and the conversations that came from their questions were informative and productive. They asked questions pertinent to their lives about gun control, marijuana, and alcohol abuse.

Another topic I’d like to talk about is Future Ready Iowa. This is the governor’s bill and initiative, working to educate and train Iowans for the future. The bill creates a series of programs to encourage education to fill the gaps in Iowa’s workforce. I am proud to support the Governors ideas on this program through apprenticeship programs for high-demand jobs, a volunteer mentor program and summer internship programs. It is very important Iowans have the training to meet the needs of industry and careers across Iowa.

I’ve had a number of travels this week speaking as the Senate Ag Committee chair. Each area of the state has its beauty and gifts, and I’m blessed to meet the people across Iowa as we work together to make agriculture grow in Iowa.
