'Grow Communities' check goes to MCSD

Jones County farmer Renee Adams directed $2,500 to the Monticello Community School District through America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Bayer Fund.

Celebrating its 10th year, the program partners with farmers to support nonprofit organizations strengthening rural communities, by directing the donation to the nonprofit of their choice. It has awarded more than $33 million to more than 8,000 nonprofits across rural America.

Farmers apply for the funding every year.

“Farmers are invested in their communities, they root for their neighbors, and they know when and where there is a need,” said Al Mitchell, vice president of corporate engagement for Bayer.

Adams presented the check to the Monticello School Board at the board’s meeting May 28. Asked where she would like to see the money go, Adams said she’d like to see it go toward curriculum that teaches kids about handling their financial affairs once their school days are done.

“If it’s possible, I’d like to see it go toward more (ways to) teach kids things about daily living,” Adams said. “Things that people do every day, every year.”
