Freshman Kale Hansen won a conference championship, Kain Luensman was also a finalist, and the Monticello High School wrestling team had six place-winners at the River Valley Conference Wrestling Tournament Feb. 1 in Tipton.

West Liberty was the team champion with 211.5 points, and Camanche was second with 200.5. Monticello totaled 118.5 points to finish seventh as a team, missing sixth place by 8.5 points.

Hansen, 33-3, defeated all three of his opponents by fall, and none of them made it to a third period.

“Kale had a great tournament,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “He battled hard every match and was aggressive. He wanted that title, and he earned it.”

Luensman (38-2) won by a technical fall and then a fall to reach the finals, where he was edged 8-6 by Eric Kinkaid of Camanche.

“Kain had a solid meet as well,” the coach said. “He had a great test in the finals and a few things didn’t go his way. He will make adjustments and will improve for bigger matches in the future.”

The Panthers also had a pair of third place finishers, Owen Ray at 120 pounds and Dylan Roher at 145.

Taking fourth was Bo Kramer at 152. Ethan Tallman wound up in a tie for fifth place at 126.

“Overall it was a solid day of wrestling,” coach Luensman said. “We had many guys wrestle above their seeds and avenge some losses from earlier in the season.”

Two days earlier, the Panthers hosted their final home meet of the season, winning one of three matches in a quadrangular format against non-conference opponents.

Monticello lost to Edgewood-Colesburg 48-36, defeated Maquoketa Valley 54-24, and lost to North Fayette Valley 45-28.

“Our final duals were tough,” Luensman said. “We are missing some guys due to sickness and various issues. Kain, Bo and Kale all had a solid night. Owen Thomas and Rylan Cooper both had solid wins as well.”

Kain Luensman went 2-0, both by fall. Hansen went 3-0 including a forfeit, a pin and a major decision.

Others with wins on the mat included Kramer by fall, Tallman by decision and Roher by decision.
