Hart shares update on Environmental Health

Paula Hart, Jones County Environmental Health and Board of Health administrator, provided her department update to the board of supervisors during their Sept. 20 board meeting.
Hart started working for the county in 2004. In 2007, Environmental Health split off from Emergency Management, and Hart became a department of one.
“This is my 18th year,” she told the board.
In 2000, before Hart started working for the county, Jones County contracted with Linn County Public Health for facility inspections and field work (well/septic testing).
“It’s more efficient,” Hart said. “They help to keep Jones County in compliance.”
Hart’s role includes inspecting septic tanks, wells, and public swimming pools.
When it comes to private sewers, Hart said they require a certified licensed septic inspector.
She has to maintain 12 CEUs (continuing education unit) a year to perform water testing. The cost to test a well is $18 for the lab test and $60 for the administration fee.
“I drive the water samples to the lab in Maquoketa so they can test fresh samples,” Hart said.
Hart works with the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals when it comes to abiding by the state code for public restaurants and bars, those who serve food to the public.
Because Hart is a department of one, there are times when she is out of her office. In that case, she notifies the public through her office voicemail and with a sign on her door. Her office hours are typically 8 a.m. To 4:30 p.m.
“I take time off for Board of Health meetings and conferences,” she told the board.
