Helen A. Schlueter

      Helen Schlueter passed peacefully into Eternal Glory to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 25, 2020, in San Antonio, Texas.

      Mrs. Helen Schlueter was born in the family farmhouse on a small dairy farm in Monona, Iowa, on April 8, 1924. She attended grade school in a one-room country schoolhouse and graduated from Monona High School in 1941. Following graduation, she attended Wartburg College in Waverly, where she sang in the Wartburg College Choir and obtained a commercial business certificate in 1942. Following graduation from Wartburg, she worked for several years at the library at Iowa State Teachers College in Waterloo. She married Rev. Arnold E. Schlueter on May 27, 1945 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Monona, which began over seven decades of marriage and ministry in the Lutheran churches, alongside her loving husband.

      During her many decades of faithful ministry she served as Bible Study Leader, church secretary, Sunday School Teacher, member of the choir, and organist at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, Iowa (Rev. Schlueter was the church’s first full-time resident pastor), Ascension Lutheran Church in Scottsdale, Ariz. (a mission church), St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Monticello, Iowa, Faith Lutheran Church in Dickinson, Texas, and Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, Texas. In addition, she was a wonderful homemaker and a very dedicated and loving mother always encouraging her three sons and helping with their school activities, model building, Cub Scouts, and camping trips. For years, she served as the executive secretary to the Superintendent of the Dickinson Independent School District in Dickinson, Texas. And she typed all of Pastor Schlueter’s sermons on a typewriter.

      She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Dettmann, one sister, Gladys Bierbaum and two brothers, Myron Dettmann and Lorin Dettmann.

      She is survived by her husband, Arnold Schlueter, and three sons, David Schlueter and his wife Linda, who reside in San Antonio, Texas, Daniel Schlueter and his wife Adelaida (Lita), who also reside in San Antonio, Texas and Rev. Tom Schlueter and his wife Kay, who reside in Arlington, Texas.

      She is also survived by five grandchildren: Jennifer Schlueter, Jonathan Schlueter (Barb), Joshua Schlueter, Katie Leckie (Tim), and Amy González (Allan).

      In addition, she is survived by eight great-grandchildren: Morgan, Sara, and Kate Schlueter, Nate and Luke Schlueter, T.J and Anna Leckie, and Zoey González.

      She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
