With a successful performance at the state qualifying meet, the Monticello High School girls track and field team is poised to make a run at some hardware in the upcoming Class 2A State Girls Track and Field Meet.

The Panthers, who finished third at State last year, qualified a total of 11 entries in nine different events during the qualifying meet, held Thursday, May 11 at North Fayette Valley in West Union.

“Coach (Vallerie) Lynn and I were happy to see the success all the girls had at the state qualifying meet,” Monticello coach Darren Reade said.

Monticello had double qualifiers in two individual events, with Corinne Gadient and Paige Holub finishing one-two in both the 1,500-meter run and the 3,000.

They were automatic qualifiers to State, as were the 4x800, 4x400 and distance medley relay teams.

“Paige again put together four very solid races,” Reade said, “both in her two relays and her two open events, and is showing a lot of confidence in her abilities as a runner right now.”

Earning at-large bids to state were Gabrielle Steiner in the 3,000 (fourth at the qualifying meet), Gabby Gadient in the 400 (third), and the shuttle hurdle (third) and 4x100 (third) relays.

“The 4x100 team knocked a second off its previous best, and qualified with a faster time than last year’s qualifying team. Even though the shuttle hurdle team had some in-race jitters, they still qualified with a slightly faster time than their season’s best.

“I can’t say enough about the efforts of Gabby Gadient and Gabrielle Steiner. Both of these girls are solid competitors, and it should be fun to see how they grow over the next three years.”

Cascade was the team champion with a score of 153, and the Panthers were second with 113.5.

The state meet will be Thursday through Saturday, May 18-20 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
