Herman is member of IIAC tourney champ team

     Sawyer Herman of Monticello is a member of the Wartburg College men’s basketball team that won the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Tournament championship.

     The Knights (19-9) defeated Central College 89-85 in the tournament championship game Saturday, Feb. 25 in Pella to win the title. It earned them an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, the school’s first berth in the tourney since 2001.

     Wartburg, it was announced Feb. 27, will face Benedictine (23-4) in the first round of the tournament Friday, March 3 at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, with a game time to be announced.

     It was the second conference tournament title in program history. Wartburg, seeded sixth, was the lowest-seeded team ever to win the tournament crown.

     Herman, a junior, scored 12 points in the championship game, shooting 4-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-5 from three-point range. He also made both of his free throw attempts, and collected two rebounds and two assists.

     For the season, Herman is the fifth leading scorer on the team, averaging 7.7 points per game. He has made 42.6 percent of his three-point tries (29-for-68), and is averaging 2.0 rebounds per game. He has also totaled 18 assists and 11 steals.
