Doug Herman, formerly of Monticello, shot a hole in one at Fillmore Fairways Oct. 22.

It was the first-ever ace for Herman, 55, who shot it on the course’s 150-yard fourth hole, using a 7-iron.

Golfing with Grant Wulf of Dubuque and Tim O’Neil of Chicago, Herman hit the ball uphill. He was unable to see the hole itself, but could see the flag.

“Grant said, ‘That took a nice hop. That’s going to be really good,’ ” Herman recalled.

When they got to the green, Herman, who now lives in Lake Delhi, said he was surprised when he didn’t immediately see the ball.

“Then I looked down in the hole, and there it was,” he said.

The tee box features a memorial bench for Don O’Brien, who shot a hole in one on the same hole in 1972.

As the threesome approached the tee, Herman said, “Somebody hit one in for Don.”

It turned out to be Herman.

“It was a fun experience, especially on a Saturday in late October,” he said.
